In a significant development aimed at improving waste management in Mapusa, the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has received approval to outsource door-to-door garbage collection in 10 of its municipal wards.
A senior official from the engineering department of the MMC confirmed that the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) has given the green signal to outsource waste collection operations in wards 11 to 20.
The move is expected to provide much-needed relief to the civic body, which has been struggling to manage the growing garbage menace in town.
“We have received the DMA’s order today and it will be immediately forwarded to the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC), which is expected to take over the door-to-door collection process in town,” the official said.
Sources revealed that while the GWMC will handle the overall management of the garbage collection, it will rely on the existing infrastructure of the MMC “ including garbage collection vehicles “ but will engage workers through a private agency.
The plan is designed to bring professionalism and efficiency into the collection process, which has suffered in recent months due to a shortage of manpower and irregular attendance of municipal workers.
