Once again, the political leadership in Mapusa came under scrutiny, with Mapusa Merchants Association (MMA) President Jeetendra Falari stressing the need for strong political will to resolve civic issues.
“The local MLA must be firm in decision-making. Unfortunately, he isn’t and that’s why we face such problems,” Falari said.
He revealed that the traders had submitted a representation to local MLA Joshua D’Souza, requesting that only one year’s sanitation charge be collected.
“But he simply said there’s an audit query,” Falari noted.
Criticising the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), Falari said the civic body should not treat sanitation tax as a business opportunity.
“We are the ones running businesses, not the MMC. What services are they even providing us? The municipal council exists to serve the people,” he asserted.
The remarks come amid growing unrest among traders over allegedly arbitrary and illegal sanitation charges imposed by the MMC.
