Having struggled to generate revenue, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) is in for a major financial boost as it will receive dues of around Rs 8 crore from an oil tanking company operating from Vasco.
That’s not all. The company has also agreed to hand over prime land of around 9,000 sq mtrs in the heart of Vasco to the MMC.
Speaking to reporters after a council meeting on Friday, MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said one of the issues discussed was the long-pending recovery of an oil tanking company which had been running into crores of rupees and was also caught up in a legal battle. “The company has now come forward with a one-time settlement of Rs 8 crore and will also return land of 9,000 odd sq mtrs to the MMC.”
“The MMC had calculated interest on outstanding at 18 percent from 1997 to 2022, but the company is willing to pay at 12 percent. We have discussed the issue and we have resolved that we will now write to them that we will calculate the interest at 15 percent and finalise the outstanding amicably," said Rodrigues.
‘Multi-level parking project to be replaced by commercial complex’
Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Leo Rodrigues said the previously proposed multi-level car parking at the municipal garage would be scrapped and replaced with a multi-storeyed commercial complex.
"We had earlier proposed a multi-level parking project at the municipal garage site but some Councillors were of the view that similar projects in Panjim City could not generate sizeable income and had become white elephants,” Rodrigues told reporters. “We have now resolved to scrap the project and revise the proposal to take up a multi-storeyed (6 floors) commercial complex with parking facilities at the same site.”
The MMC chairperson said the council had also resolved to have the traditional seven-day fair for Damodar Saptah festival, after receiving a letter with permissions from the Saptah committee.
“We will start the process on August 2 and we have also resolved to keep the same rates for the local and furniture stalls because people have been struggling for two years due to the Covid pandemic," said Rodrigues.
