Mother, live-in partner booked for smothering toddler to death

BICHOLIM

In a shocking incident, a woman and her live-in partner have been booked on charges of murdering her 2-year-old daughter at Maulinguem-Bicholim.

According to police reports, a girl of 2 years and 7 months was brought dead to the Bicholim Community Health Centre on Wednesday.

The body was then sent for an autopsy on Thursday, where it was established that the toddler had died of asphyxiation due to smothering, with multiple injuries over the body in different stages of healing, suggestive of battered baby syndrome. Bicholim police then registered a case of murder.

Police investigations revealed that the toddler’s mother, Nagamma (28), a native of Chickmangalur-Karnataka but residing at Maulinguem-Bicholim and her live-in partner, Nithin Kumara, a native of Uttara, Kannada, Karnataka but also residing at Maulinguem, had been assaulting the toddler over a period of time. It is suspected that the accused disliked the toddler as was the daughter of Nagamma’s husband.

On Wednesday evening, both the accused persons assaulted the toddler and then allegedly smothered her to death.

Acting on a state complaint by PSI Vikesh Hadfadkar, Bicholim police registered an offence of murder under Section 103 r/w 3(5) BNS, 2023 and sec 8 GCA, 2003 against Nagamma and Kumara.
