NGO Goa First has on Friday writen to authorities like the Dy Collector, Chief Officer and Health Officer seeking permission to install water facility for stray animals and birds in different locations of the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC).
NGO Convenor Parshuram Sonurlekar speaking to media said that with the temperature soaring higher than ever, it is essential for humans and animals to stay hydrated at all times.
"While it is easy for most of us to carry a bottle of water or perhaps buy one, hundreds of stray animals and birds die due to scorching heat and lack of access to drinking water. Several NGOs across the nation along with the local authorities have been able to provide drinking water for these stray animals. We also decided to make a request to authorities to kindly allow us to install drinking water container facility for stray animals in MMC jurisdiction during the summer season," said Sonurlekar.
Somurlekar said that they had requested the authorities to supply water at 15 locations on regular basis and to take care of these water containers.
"We have identified around 15 locations where these stray animals are often found like MPT Colony Near Community Centre, Sada garbage treatment plant, Kalavati Aai Temple Sada, GRB Colony Sada, Fisheries Department near Micro station, Ganesh Temple, Bogda, Police Quarters, Bogda, Busy Bee School Desterro, Ravindra Bhavan Baina, Safi Masjid Baina, Vasco Police quarters Baina, Tania Hotel, SAG Parking Vasco, Vegetable Market Vasco, Bhute Bhatt Ground Baina and Mangoor Hill, Near Varunapuri Gate.
"We will assure the Health Department that all the precautionary measures will be taken from our end to keep the water containers dry when not in use, to avoid breeding of mosquitoes. We have also requested the dy collector to ensure and direct the PWD and MMC for a regular supply of water," said Sonurlekar.
Sonurlekar added that water charity has been a longstanding custom in India.
"When we don’t deny a stranger arriving at our doorstep a glass of water, why deny it to the thirsty strays we encounter every day," said Sonurlekar.
