Onion distribution through PDS to beat rising prices

PANAJI
The Goa cabinet on Wednesday decided to procure onions, prices of which have soared in the open market, through NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation).

The onions will be supplied through the PDS system and each ration card holding household will get a quota of three kilos.

This will be a one-off arrangement due to rising onion prices in the market, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said after the cabinet meeting on Wednesday afternoon.

The distribution will commence within 10 days, he added.

With the prices of onions soaring, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the order to procure from NAFED will be issued.

He also indicated that in a maximum of ten days the vegetable, an essential in every Goan kitchen, distribution will comnense through PDS.

The three kilograms per ration card will cost Rs 30-32 per kilogram, he said.

Prices of onions in the local markets have been heading north over the last month or so and are currently traded in retail at nearly Rs 90 per kilogram.

Meanwhile, the old contractor of the Goa Broadband Network (GBBN) - - Nupur Technologies - - has been granted a 6-month extension by the cabinet.

The decision to grant the extension to the firm tasked with providing connectivity to government departments was taken as the transition to the new contractor is delayed, Sawant said.

The Cabinet also extended the appointment of Dr Annupama Borkar as Senior Consulting Oncologist at the GMC's Oncology department for another year.

It also granted post-facto approval to expenditure incurred on purchase of N-95 masks by GMC.
