The opposition on Monday vehemently criticised the government with Congress MLA Carlos Ferreira alleging that a senior IPS officer was behind the unlawful demolition of a house in Assagao, even as he called for the establishment of a special inquiry commission headed by a retired high court judge.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao accused the BJP of supporting a real estate mafia that is forcibly displacing Goan families from their homes while Goa Forward Party President Vijai Sardesai echoed these sentiments, claiming that the police department has effectively outsourced its operations to "goondas" and "Delhiwallas."
Ferreira condemned the illegal demolition, emphasising that lawful procedures must be followed to evict residents, even if the property has been sold.
“You cannot take the law into your own hands and demolish a house. You must file a suit, obtain a declaration, and secure an eviction notice,” Ferreira stated. He alleged that the demolition was orchestrated with the involvement of a high-ranking IPS officer.
“I have evidence suggesting a very senior IPS officer was involved. I urge the chief minister to set up a special inquiry commission led by a retired high court judge and to remove the officer in question,” Ferreira demanded.
Alemao highlighted the alarming trend of the real estate mafia, allegedly patronised by the BJP, using force to evict Goans from their homes.
“This incident is a warning for Goans selling their land to outsiders. If we do not learn from these incidents, these mafias will seize every inch of Goa,” Alemao warned.
Sardesai described the situation as a complete breakdown of law and order, accusing the police of colluding with criminals.
“We do not want the culture of Bulldozer Raj seen in UP and other states. Goa is a law-abiding state with mechanisms to address grievances. Taking the law into one's own hands is unacceptable,” Sardesai asserted.
He warned that if the government fails to act, Goans would be forced to seek justice themselves.
“If the government does not take action, Goenkars will take the law into their own hands and deliver justice. The CM must take immediate action,” Sardesai added.
