In a significant decision, the South Goa District Collector, Egna Cleetus, has notified parking areas for Persons with Disabilities at public places across the district.
While issuing directions to the PWD officials to take up the work of earmarking slots, erecting a proportionate number of signboards, and implementing other measures to facilitate and provide ease of access to persons with disabilities, the Collector has directed the officials to submit the Action Taken Report to her office within 30 days, including photographs of the work executed.
The Collector has warned that non-compliance with the order shall attract penal provisions under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The notification has been issued in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 112 and 116 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 (Central Act of 59 of 1988) and Rule 264-A of the Goa Motor Vehicle (Amendment) Rules, 2005.
In Margao, the notification has designated parking areas for Persons with Disabilities at Sapna Plaza Bldg., Pajifond, Caro Corner Margao, near Champs Sports Shop New Market, Ravindra Margao Bhavan, opposite Union Bank of India Margao, Margao Residency, opposite Fatima Convent, in front of SBI Margao, in front of Ulhas Jewellers Margao, and opposite MPTS Sulabh.
Similar places have been notified for Persons with Disabilities at Vasco, Ponda, Curchorem, Canacona, Quepem, Dabolim, besides the Colva beach circle (1st ramp) and at Benaulim beach.
