People's tendency to oppose every project dangerous: CM Chief Minister Pramod Sawant during a function in Mayem to lay the foundation stones for five development projects in the constituency. Captured by : The Goan

BICHOLIM
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday slammed residents of Mayem for their “unwarranted” opposition to the establishment of a proposed international law college in the village.

Addressing the public at the Mayem Vainguinim panchayat hall after laying the foundation stones for five development projects worth Rs 50 crore in Mayem constituency, Sawant took the opportunity to hit out at those trying to take political mileage by opposing the law college.

“It is a human tendency to oppose each and every thing, but we cannot let politics get in the way of development. I don't understand why people oppose educational institutions like IIT, NIT or law college. Development is key to the progress of any village and its people," Sawant said.

“If quality projects are coming up on government land, the tendency to oppose them is dangerous and hinders the prosperity of future generations. The villagers should, instead, cooperate with good projects for the benefit of the village.”

The chief minister said the government has resolved to set up a law college of an international standard and other projects on government land in Mayem for the all-round future of the new generation. “If the locals do not cooperate, how can the village develop,” asked Sawant

Voicing his displeasure over opposition to development projects, the chief minister accused the Congress and Goa Forward Party of misleading people by doing unnecessary politics.

‘Through the new project, the young generation will get quality education and the opportunity to soar on a global scale. I appealed to everyone to abandon the attitude of opposition and cooperate with the government's development process, keeping in mind the interests of the village,” he added.

Others present on the occasion were Mayem MLA Premendra Shet, Chairperson of North Goa Zilla Parishad Shankar Chodankar, Mayem Sarpanch Krishna Chodankar, ZP member Mahesh Sawant, North Goa BJP President Dayanand Karbotkar, and members of various panchayats in Mayem constituency.

The five major works includes conversion of existing 11KV overhead line to underground cable in Mayem area, work of conversion of existing 11KV overhead line to underground cable in Ona-Maulinguem-Kudchirem & interlinking of 11KV Kudchirem feeder to 11KV Karapur feeder by underground cable in order to maintain reliable power supply to Kudchirem village, work of improvement and strengthening of MI Tank at Mayem in Bicholim Taluka regarding providing RCC lining cut off and M S Railing and improvement to the Katcha Canal, work of reconstruction of sluice gate and strengthening of the bund Vainguinim Khazan' at Vainguinim-Mayem in Bicholim Taluka and work of upgradation/ beautification of Shree Vithal Temple in Bicholim taluka.

Sawant also congratulated MLA Premendra Shet for the performance of the Horticulture Corporation and for his consistent follow-up in the constituency and for successfully implementing 200 projects so far.

Efforts by the State government to propose a law college on government land in Mayem received a major setback on February 2, when residents at the Mayem Gram Sabha unanimously passed a resolution to oppose the project.

When the issue came up for discussion at the Gram Sabha, residents made it clear that land ownership issues in the village should first be resolved before proposing projects in the village.
