The Cyber Crime Cell arrested seven persons for running a fake international call centre and impersonating loan agents to dupe US nationals.
Details shared by Cyber Crime SP Rahul Gupta reveal that the impersonators, hailing from Gujarat, Nagaland, Assam and Rajasthan duped US citizens by deceiving them into transferring money.
The accused operated from a hotel in Calangute.
“They impersonated agents from loan companies, Amazon HQ staff, bank employees, government agencies and law enforcement agencies, deceiving innocent citizens in the USA. Through technical surveillance, our team detected the operation of the fake call centre in Calangute and cracked down on them,” he said.
During the raid, police recovered four laptops, one TP-Link router and a D-Link switch, all of which will be sent for cyber forensic examination. “Investigations have revealed that the accused made voice calls to US citizens, convincing them to transfer money under false pretences,” Gupta said while urging people to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the local police or nearby Cyber Police Stations to help in apprehending such criminals.
