In a proposal submitted to the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC), Inovativa Waste Aid & Management Pvt Ltd, a private waste management agency, has sought the contract for door-to-door garbage collection in Mapusa.
The agency is requesting permission to operate in 10 of the city’s 20 wards, with provisions to register all households and commercial units and the right to collect fees directly from waste generators.
Managing Director of Inovativa, Gaurav Pokle outlined the agency’s plan in the proposal, emphasizing effective zoning, a five-way waste segregation system, and a robust monitoring mechanism with an independent supervisor to address concerns from clients and councillors.
“Inovativa will implement effective zoning and will have a monitoring mechanism along with an independent supervisor for client and councillor redressal,” Pokle stated.
Inovativa has requested the authority to register all waste generators, including bulk waste producers and collect fees as per municipal byelaws.
According to the proposal, the collected fees would cover operational costs, including salaries for door-to-door staff, supervisors, safety gear, bins, and other consumables.
Pokle highlighted the potential benefits of the proposal, including more reliable garbage collection, a reduction in illegal dumping sites and a streamlined waste management system.
“Citizens will get good services and relief from issues faced due to irregular collection of waste. Effective collection will reduce black spots which have been spreading across the city,” he said.
He further said that the agency will implement segregation at source which will ensure up to 90 to 95 per cent waste collected is sent for treatment and less than five per cent as reject.
The MMC is expected to review the proposal in an upcoming council meeting scheduled for November 18.
