In a bid to enhance water infrastructure and address long-standing issues of ageing pipelines, the Public Works Department (PWD) water division in Mapusa has announced plans to replace old water pipelines across various parts of the city.
The ambitious project, undertaken as part of the AMRUT 2.0 central government scheme, is projected to cost approximately Rs 7.1 crore.
Assistant Engineer T Sirsat of the PWD (water) division highlighted the necessity of the project, stating that the existing pipelines, primarily composed of asbestos, are outdated and in dire need of replacement.
The new pipelines, made of ductile iron (DI), are considered more suitable for potable water transmission and distribution.
The scope of the project encompasses areas including Angod, Ektanagar, and Housing Board, spanning a total area of around 12 to 13 kms. Replacement work will involve pipelines of various diameters, ranging from 200 mm to 100 mm, tailored to fit the specifications of the existing lines.
"We have already issued the work order for the project, and upon receipt of the DI pipes consignment, we will commence work promptly," stated Sirsat.
The department has received the consignment of 200 mm pipelines and is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the remaining materials to initiate the project.
Priority will be given to laying pipelines in Angod, where recent excavation for underground electricity cabling has already disrupted roads.
"It's imperative to capitalise on the existing excavations to minimise further inconvenience to residents and businesses," explained Sirsat.
However, the prolonged disruption has sparked concerns among locals and business owners in Angod, who have been grappling with significant dust pollution due to the dug-up roads.
Laura D'Sa, owner of a pharmacy in the area, expressed frustration over the lack of action to address the issue.
"Our premises are constantly covered in dust, causing considerable inconvenience. We urge authorities to expedite road repairs and alleviate our concerns," she remarked.
The impending pipeline replacement project signals a significant step towards modernising Mapusa's water infrastructure and mitigating long-standing issues of leakage and inefficiency associated with ageing pipelines.
