Rain continues to pound Goa, 50% surplus recorded so far

As many as 886 incidents of tree felling have been reported this month alone, coinciding with several red alert weather warnings even as the State recorded over 50 percent surplus seasonal rainfall in just one and a half months.

Among these incidents, on Thursday evening, a large rain tree uprooted and collapsed on a moving taxi and a bike near Panaji Church. Three occupants were injured and vehicles damaged badly. People rushed to their rescue and called emergency teams.

The incident also damaged a portion of the roadside where the tree stood.

According to details available with The Goan, of the total incidents, 389 trees fell on roads, 208 on residential structures while the remaining fell on electrical lines, vehicles and other structures.

The State has witnessed a trail of destruction with landslides, accidents, tree felling, water logging and house collapses reported since the onset of the monsoon.

On Thursday morning, two accidents on Zuari Bridge were reported. One involved Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar's car, with the Speaker and six other occupants escaping without injuries. In another accident between a truck and a car, the driver and passenger were injured.
