Executive Engineer (NH), PWD, Jude Carvalho clarified that the alignment of the elevated corridor in Porvorim cannot be changed at this stage, as construction work has already progressed significantly.
Carvalho explained that Pillar 34 is set to be constructed near the centuries-old banyan tree, while work on Pillar 33, located just 40 metres away, has already been completed. Similarly, construction of Pillar 35, also 40 metres away on the opposite side, is currently underway.
“If the alignment were to be changed, adjustments would have to be made at least 400 metres away. At this stage, altering the alignment is simply not possible,” Carvalho stated firmly.
The engineer also revealed that Zilla Panchayat member Kartik Kudnekar had previously given consent for the removal of a structure near the banyan tree during the land acquisition process when the matter was before the Supreme Court.
Regarding the relocation of a temple near the tree, Carvalho mentioned that he had asked the caretaker to suggest an alternative site for the idol.
“If no location is suggested, we will have to shift it temporarily elsewhere to ensure that the project is completed,” he said.
Carvalho further noted that a historic chapel near Dr Pinto Rosario Hospital was relocated amicably for the same project.
“The chapel committee readily agreed to shift the structure for public development. Their cooperation made the process smooth,” he added.
