A 71-year-old man from Nagoa, Verna, succumbed to injuries on Sunday following a road accident that occurred near Titan Junction, opposite Marble City, on Thursday evening.
The deceased, identified as Vithoba Rane (71 ), and a resident of Police Colony Society, Nagoa, was riding his Activa scooter towards Cortalim around 4:00 pm when the accident took place. According to police sources, Rane reportedly collided with an Innova car that was travelling in the same direction. The impact caused him to fall onto the road, following which he was run over by a Tata Tipper moving in the left lane, also in the same direction.
Rane sustained grievous injuries to his leg and was immediately shifted to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, where he succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment.
Verna Police, who were alerted via a wireless message from the Casualty Police outpost at GMC Bambolim, initiated an enquiry into the matter. Officials visited the hospital, conducted an inquest panchanama, and sent the body for postmortem examination.
The police surgeon later certified the cause of death as “haemorrhage and shock with acute renal failure consequent to crushing to the right lower limb consequent to being run over by motor vehicle.” The body was subsequently handed over to the family for final rites.
A case of unnatural death has been registered under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Further investigation is being carried out by PSI Anand Gaonkar of Verna Police Station under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and the guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
