Scrap worth Rs 30 lakh was destroyed after a massive fire engulfed a scrapyard at Guirim in the wee hours of Sunday.
Firefighters who rushed to the spot managed to save property worth Rs 80 lakh. The cause of the fire is suspected to be short-circuit.
Porvorim fire station officials said they received a call past midnight Saturday informing them of a blaze at a scrapyard near Ticlo petrol pump, Guirim.
A fire brigade was immediately sent at the site but officials realized that the blaze was massive and requested support from Panaji headquarters, Mapusa and Pilerne fire stations.
The fire was finally brought under control with the help of four fire tenders and after a massive operation that lasted nearly six hours. Property worth Rs 80 lakh was saved.
Additional Divisional Officer Bosco Ferrao, incharge of Mapusa and Pilerne fire station Shrikrishna Parrikar and incharge of Porvorim fire station Dattaram Pednekar supervised the operation.
