Season's rainfall crosses100-inch mark in State

PANAJI

Much ahead of its normal date, Goa crossed 100-inch mark rainfall for this monsoon season on Sunday morning. Normal date for 100 inch rain in the state is August 22.

The Southwest monsoon onset over Goa was on June 11, six days after the normal date. Despite a delayed monsoon and a rain-deficit June, the State has recorded 18 per cent excess showers as on date.

Goa received just 6.8 mm rain in the last 24 hours, ending 8.30am on Sunday taking the cumulative total to 2543.4 mm which is just above 100 inch. The normal rainfall during this period is around 2154.3 mm.

After a record breaking rain of 1000 mm in just 15 days from July 13 to July 27, monsoon took almost ten days to complete 100 mm rain from July 28 to August 6. This can be attributed to weak monsoon currents.

For the current season, June 28 (142.5mm) has been the wettest day followed by July 6 (131.2mm)

As per the record, last year, the coastal State had crossed 100 inch rainfall on September 11 while in 2021; the target was achieved on August 29.

Before that in 2020 and 2019, 100 inch rainfall was achieved as early as August 5 and August 6 respectively.
