A tragic road accident has claimed the life of 62-year-old pedestrian Ramchandra Shirodkar, resident of Danva, Tivim, when he was struck by a scooter ridden by a 17-year-old minor along the village road late on Saturday evening.
According to police sources, the minor was riding the scooter when the collision occurred.
Shirodkar was severely injured and was immediately taken to Goa Medical College (GMC), Bambolim, but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
Following the incident, Colvale Police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Act “ both against the minor for reckless driving and for causing death by negligent act “ as well as against the legal owner of the scooter, since minors are not legally permitted to ride two-wheelers on public roads without a licence or proper authorisation.
A police official said, “We have lodged an FIR in this case. Investigation is underway to establish the exact sequence of events, including whether the minor was riding under the influence or at excessive speed and whether the owner of the vehicle was aware or allowed this. We are also gathering witness statements and examining CCTV footage in the area.”
The case highlights recurring issues in the State over minors driving vehicles, legal liability of vehicle owners and public safety on roads.
