Opposition Leader Digambar Kamat on Thursday warned of a statewide agitation if the State government used force to suppress protests against the IIT project at Shel-Melauli.
Kamat was speaking to reporters after he along with GPCC President Girish Chodankar and other Congress leaders visited the Valpoi police station and later interacting with agitating locals at Shel-Melauli.
Kamat, Chodankar and other GPCC leaders submitted a memorandum to DySP Gajanan Prabhudesai, demanding the withdrawal of FIRs registered against the protesters and congress workers in connection with the clashes on Wednesday. He also had a detailed discussion with DySP Prabhudesai.
Later speaking to reporters, Kamat accused the State government of imposing the IIT project on the people of Shel-Melauli.
“The Congress party has been supporting the local movement against the project from the very beginning and the government should move the project to another place without setting it up at Melauli.”
“If the government deliberately tries to crush the agitation by locals, it will have serious consequences and the agitation will taken place across the State,” warned Kamat.
He recalled that when he was chief minister, projects like SEZ had been cancelled due to public opposition.
Later, Kamat visited Shel-Melauli and interacted with the protesting locals, assuring his full support to their agitation.
