A 22-year-old youth of Uttar Pradesh drowned while taking a selfie on a rock at the Vagator beach on Sunday evening.
Although authorities launched a search operation, the body of the youth who is identified as Arjun Kumar was not found till late in the evening.
The incident took place at around 3 pm after the youth along with one of his kin went to the sea at small Vagator.
The two ventured into the rocky area along the beach and went into a selfie clicking spree.
A life guard on the beach warned the duo a number of times not to click selfies at the spot as it was a risky spot.
Despite the warning, the duo continued to risk their lives by clicking pictures from the rocks.
According to an eyewitness, both slipped and fell in the waters when a huge wave crashed on the rocks where they were taking selfies.
The lifeguard on duty rushed to their rescue but managed to save only one of them as the other person went missing.
According to Anjuna police the deceased had recently come to Goa along with his relative and both were residing at Nerul.
“The youth was working as a fabricator in Nerul,” a police official informed.
Incidentally, a big crowd of tourists had gathered on the Vagator beach on Sunday.
In spite of the severe cyclonic storm “Biparjoy” warning the people on the beach were seen venturing into the sea.
The lifeguards on duty had a hard time controlling the surging crowd and warning them about the imminent danger due to the storm.
