'Verna SEZ land best suited for IIT instead of Melauli'

PANAJI

Goencho Ekvott, United Goans Foundation on Thursday suggested that land at the Verna which was acquired for SEZ earlier is best suited for the proposed IIT project instead of the controversial site at Shel-Melauli.

The organisations have also suggested Quittol as the second option for the IIT project

"GSIDC's 22 lakh square metre land is lying idol at Verna. The government has taken a loan of Rs 250 crore for which it pays a monthly EMI of Rs 3.90 crores. This land is best suited for an educational hub and IIT," said Ashish Kamat of United Goans Foundation.

Kamat said that politicians come with projects with their vested interest and try to impose such plans by hook or crook.

Arvind Menezes of UGF explained how the land at Verna is best suited for an educational hub and IIT.

He said that activists in Goa are not against the IIT, but they want it at a centrally located position in Goa.

Menezes said they have already made a memorandum to the government demanding that IIT should come at Verna.

Verna is well connected through road, port and airport and will be best for an IIT said Zarina D'couna of Goencho Ekvott.

The central location will benefit Goans to generate jobs, she added.
