The villagers of Calangute strongly objected to the issuance of a license for a casino in the area, urging the authorities to conduct an immediate inspection of the premises.
The casino is located in a hotel just opposite the panchayat office, a situation that has raised concerns among local residents.
Ward member Sunita Mayekar voiced her dissatisfaction with the casino's licence issuance, calling for a thorough investigation into whether the structure complies with the approved plans.
“I strongly urge the authorities to conduct a thorough inspection of the premises to ensure the structure complies with the approved plans. Additionally, the adequacy of parking spaces must be evaluated to prevent inconvenience to locals,” Mayekar said in her complaint to the sarpanch.
Several gram sabha members stressed that the casino could cause potential issues for the community, especially with regard to its compliance with regulations.
The villagers insisted that the panchayat should closely examine the establishment and, if any violations are found, revoke its license.
The residents are particularly concerned about the impact the casino could have on local traffic and infrastructure, with insufficient parking being a key issue. Many believe that without proper checks, the establishment could contribute to overcrowding and create unnecessary inconvenience for the community.
