In a much needed relief to the citizens, water supply to the parts of Taleigao has been restored after a 50-day long period of disruption. However, residents of Palm-Grove- Cardoz Wada and Porshebhat, might have to wait for some more time as the work to lay a new pipeline is in progress.
Following E.coli contamination in the water pipeline network, PWD had disconnected water supply to the areas like Vodlem Bhat, Borbhat, Cardoz Wada, Shankarwadi, Durbhat, Durgawadi and Porshebhat and had initiated a process to replace the water pipeline for close to 500 connections.
Speaking to The Goan, Executive Engineer Sarita Shirodkar confirmed that the department has replaced the pipeline and water has been restored to more than 90 per cent of the affected area. “Only parts of Cardoz Wada that is Palm grove estate and areas of Porshebhat will have to wait. We were supposed to put up new 7mtrs long PVC for Palm grove estate but due to heavy rains that work could not be taken up,” Shirodkar said.
Shirodkar said that if it does not rain on Wednesday then the pipeline will be laid and water will be released by Thursday.
In the case of Porshebhat, the entire pipeline was corroded and has been replaced; only the connections are left, she explained.
Shirodkar said that the rest of the areas have started receiving water supply since yesterday (Monday). She said that all this while, the consumers were provided water tankers, as per demand, to meet their requirements.
The lab tests of water samples from Vodlem Bhat and Borbhat have confirmed the presence of E.Coli bacteria in the potable water while test samples of surrounding places are awaited.
PWD officials said there are no leaks in the main water pipeline and that the contamination, they believe, stems from private service connections.
