Upset at the Goa Police’s new initiative of keeping a tab of people visiting bars and pubs, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Saturday said Goa Police needed to first put its own house in order and wondered why no FIR has been lodged against the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for allegedly getting drunk and misbehaving with a party attendee.
Lobo said the DIG’s binge was not restricted to just one place, but he was found visiting several spots in Anjuna, Vagator, Baga and Sinquerim.
“The DIG used to get totally drunk, so much so he had to be helped by someone. He has misbehaved with a woman and even drove back home in inebriated condition which is an offence. The Director General of Police (DGP) has all the CCTV footage, but it beats me why no FIR has been lodged against him or why was he not suspended,” Lobo said.
He said a normal citizen would have been immediately incarcerated for such an act.
Last week, the State government relieved the DIG A Koan of his post after a video clip showed him getting drunk and allegedly misbehaving with a woman in a pub in Bardez.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured to take immediate action against the IPS officer after the incident was raised by the opposition MLA Vijai Sardesai in the Goa Legislative Assembly last week.
The Calangute MLA said that a law enforcing agency getting involved in such behaviour was not accepted.
He also questioned the media for not highlighting the DIG’s issue.
He further slammed the Goa Police for coming with a plan of stationing police officials outside the bars and pubs to monitor party-goers alcohol consumption.
“You want to keep the police outside bars? What do you want to show that you are enforcing the law? This is wrong. It’s absolutely wrong. Just because of one accident you want to harass everyone?” he said.
He said the police action should be continuous and not because of just one accident.
