Cuncolim MLA and Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao has pointed accusing fingers at the ruling BJP for trying to destabilise the democratically-elected Cuncolim Municipal Council.
Yuri, who was holed up in New Delhi on Friday in connection with the election of the new Congress president, charged the BJP leadership for trying to destabilise the Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Laxman Naik.
The Cuncolim MLA recalled that he had gone to the people of Cuncolim with a Congress-backed panel in the 2021 Municipal election, wherein Cuncolkars had given a clear mandate, with the panel winning nine out of the 14 seats at stake. “First, they weaned away Uddesh Desai from the group and they have taken Raymond D’Souza from the Congress-backed panel. I want to only say that Cuncolkars had given a clear mandate to the Congress panel with nine councillors in the 2021 election,” he said.
He added: “The Cuncolim Municipal Council was the only civic body where the Congress has been ruling in the State. Cuncolkars have by and large appreciated my stand in not defecting to the BJP. Now, the ruling party is out to dislodge a democratically-elected Council,” he charged.
