‘Dengue cases in Canacona, an isolated incident’

MAPUSA

The recent spike in dengue cases in Canacona has been identified as an isolated incident, according to Dr Kalpana Mahatme, the health officer in charge of the national vector-borne disease programme.

Dr Mahatme confirmed that the number of suspected dengue cases in Gaondongirim, Canacona, has decreased.

"We cannot consider Canacona as a high-risk area since this was just an isolated incident," Dr Mahatme stated.

"Our investigation revealed it was a case of an imported virus," she added.

The investigation found that workers from another state, engaged in renovation and repair work on two to three houses in the village, were carriers of the dengue virus.

"The locals contracted the virus from these outstation workers," Dr Mahatme explained.

In response, health officials implemented several measures, including fogging and advising locals to avoid accumulating water to prevent mosquito breeding.

"Our efforts have paid dividends, and the suspected cases have come down in the region," Dr Mahatme reported.

The health department's quick and targeted actions have helped control the spread of dengue in Canacona, demonstrating the effectiveness of their response to this isolated outbreak.
