The mangrove boardwalk along the Rua de Ourem creek in Panaji has been partly shut by the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) reportedly due to concerns about the safety of citizens and tourists using it as portions of it are damaged and could lead to users falling.

A top CCP official said they are awaiting a convenient date from architectural consultants to conduct an inspection and assess the damage so that repair work can be planned and scheduled.

The boardwalk had been constructed by the Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited (IPSCDL) but the ownership was transferred to the CCP in 2021.

In early March, the CCP had filed a formal complaint with the Panaji police, alleging that the damage caused along the boardwalk appeared to be the handiwork of miscreants. It had listed damage to the flooring, missing benches, and broken railings, among other issues.

However, police investigation hit a dead-end after the CCP was unable to provide CCTV footage and only produced an inspection report. The boardwalk, which has gained some popularity, covers an area of over 1,000 square metres on the southern side of the Rua de Ourem creek.
