Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão has stated that while the Catholic Church has played a major role in shaping modern education and its institutions continue to contribute strongly to nation-building, the responsibility to raise standards each year remains urgent.
Cardinal Ferrão—President of both the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI) and the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC)— was addressing a gathering while releasing the Indian edition of ‘Drawing New Maps of Hope’, Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Letter on education in the digital age, in Penang, Malaysia on November 27.
Cardinal Ferrão launched the book by presenting the first copy to Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelisation.
Speaking at the event, Cardinal Ferrão said educational charisms are not fixed formulas but living responses to the needs of every age.
Each generation brings fresh questions, he noted, and Catholic education must read these signs with clarity and courage. True charisms grow, he said, when they stay close to people and listen to the hopes and struggles of the young.
Cardinal Ferrão stressed that education must move with the times without losing its roots. It must connect faith with life and culture, and it must do so with creativity and trust. The future of Catholic education, he said, depends on communities that listen, discern and respond with love.
The book release marks a key moment for Catholic educators as they face the fast-changing realities of the digital era. Those interested in copies of the book may contact the CCBI by email (ccbipublications@gmail.com) or phone (9886730224).
