PANAJI: Goa has become the first state in India to achieve 100% literacy, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced today during a press briefing. The official declaration of this historic milestone will be made during the Statehood Day celebrations on May 30.

“Goa has achieved 100% literacy, a proud moment for our state and the country. The official declaration will be done on the Statehood Day at Kala Academy, Panaji, on May 30,” said Sawant.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had stated that Goa’s literacy rate stood at 94%, with focused efforts in place to reach full literacy. Although the original target was December 19,2024, the state achieved full literacy in the months that followed.

The Ministry of Education, Government of India, has certified the achievement, recognising Goa’s success in bridging the final 6% literacy gap through the New India Literacy Programme. The announcement at the 39th Statehood Day event will mark a significant milestone in Goa’s educational journey.
