Refusing to extend police custody of the accused in the Rama Kankonkar assault case, the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), Panaji, stated it cannot be prolonged merely to recover alleged weapons used in the crime.

The Panaji police, during the remand hearing, submitted that a vehicle used by the accused from Nuvem, a knife, and mobile phones are still missing. The submission also stated that the accused, including Zenito Cardozo's further interrogation, was required for the recovery.

The JMFC clarified that extending police custody only for recovery was not permissible, and remanded all eight accused to 14 days of judicial custody. At the same time, it allowed them to seek the accused’ police custody again if new facts arose during the ongoing investigation.
