The Ministry of Education (MoE) has come up with a good proposal to introduce the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for undergraduate admissions in all programmes and in all Central Universities. The first CUET will be held in July for the academic session 2022-23. CUET gives an equal footing for eligible students especially to those from rural and remote areas to enroll in any university, based on the students’ ranking and subjects of study.
The MoE has exempted 7 universities from the NE States and also of Uttarakhand from conducting the CUET. The students will seek admission, as in the past, in affiliated colleges to Central Universities. The reasons for not been able to conduct the exams are: hilly terrain, far-flung locations, limited digital connectivity, infrastructure etc. India is famous for holding elections, setting up polling booths, sending poll officers etc. under the above conditions and even for a handful of voters residing in remote areas. The MoE has time to revert its decision so that the students from the 8 States do not lose an opportunity to study their subject of interest in a university of their choice.
