Goa and Goans are taken for granted. Glaring negligence in protecting heritage sites is a recurring issue. The ASI-protected heritage sites suffer from neglect, with many in distress. Scams, legalizing illegal constructions by bending the rules have become a norm in Goa. Recent inspection report submitted to SC by a committee regarding the disputed structure in Ella village, Old Goa, centres on the development of a modern bungalow within a UNESCO World Heritage precinct and protected monument zone, showing fresh structure erected after razing the original building. And thus violating norms meant to protect the outstanding universal value of Old Goa. These instances highlight that without strict enforcement of laws, increased funding, and public awareness, irreplaceable cultural treasures face irreversible damage. Why is the ASI failing in its core responsibility? The government and its authorities should not play with the sentiments of the people. It is time for answers, accountability, and immediate action.
