Akiyo, an 81-year-old elderly woman from Japan, was recently imprisoned for the second time. The reason? She had previously committed a theft and, later, repeated a similar crime. For most people, going to prison is a humiliating and shameful experience. However, Akiyo is an exception. She was actually happy to be imprisoned again. But why did she want to go to prison? Elderly people face numerous challenges, particularly loneliness. This is a global issue affecting seniors. At this stage of life, the body is exhausted, mobility is limited, and various health problems arise. There is no one to talk to, no one to understand their joys and sorrows. Even their own children see them as a burden. Akiyo, too, was trapped in the loneliness of old age. Eventually, hunger forced her to steal. When caught, she was sent to prison. However, once inside, she found herself surrounded by fellow inmates ” many of whom were women her age, suffering from the same loneliness. This made her happy. She found companionship, and most importantly, she had a place to stay and regular meals. Many seniors like Akiyo are searching for ways to make aging more bearable.
