Our country is celebrating the national road safety month from January 17 to February 18, 2021.
Last year we were lucky to hear of less number of road accident deaths due to the pandemic which was only because many vehicles and public were off the road. The Covid situation is improving, vehicles are back on the roads and the usual careless attitude has returned.
The transport department and traffic police should also keep a check on goods vehicles and public transport vehicles that violate rules and are also a major cause of many deaths on the roads.
Goods vehicles and rickshaws carry material beyond their capacity and designs.
Recently, the Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said the State will have to implement the new Motor Vehicles Act and that the heavy fines mandated in the Act were to check the bad habits of riders and drivers.
It would be in the fitness of things if our State government implements the MV Act during this road safety month in order to drive home the point of safety on roads.
We all need to be responsible citizens. It is also time the government reintroduces the traffic sentinel scheme.
