Save Goan ‘pao’ from extinction


The government’s decision asking the humble ‘poder’ to bake the most loved ‘pao’ using the electric oven is uncalled for. 

The Pollution Board too instead of helping the poor ‘poder’ to install a scientific chimney, asks him to stop the traditional way of baking. 

Pao is not only relished by our Goenkars but all those who visit the State too. 

Instead of making such frivolous recommendations, the Pollution Board must stop industries that pollute the environment with deadly smoke or wastage that flows from their chimneys. 

The Geographical Indication registry under the Department of Industry Promotion and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry should step in and help the humble nutritious traditional baked ‘pao’ of Goa get a GI tag.

Its time better sense prevails so that our traditional Goan ‘pao’ can be saved from extinction of its traditional baking procedure.
