Several sections of the Western Bypass remain in darkness as streetlights stay permanently unlit, posing grave risks to motorists and pedestrians. Just days ago, a senior citizen was struck by a motorcycle, sustaining multiple injuries, and is now battling for his life at GMC.
Ironically, while the Power Minister is swift in issuing disconnection notices to consumers with meters inside their premises, he appears indifferent to the plight caused by dysfunctional streetlights.
The situation on the Eastern Bypass is no better. The stretch from Nuvem junction to Arlem junction continues to remain unlit despite repeated reports in the press. This two-way, 8-metre-wide road carries heavy night traffic, including multi-axle trailers from Verna industrial estate. Its narrowness and lack of lighting make it a potential death trap.
Urgent action is needed to widen the road, install a central median, and provide proper illumination before another tragedy strikes. The question remains: is the Power Department listening, or simply preparing the next hike in power tariffs?
