A video that has gone viral shows a layer of formalin being peeled off from a mackerel that was bought at one of the fish markets in Goa. While the price of fish has skyrocketed, are Goans buying fish that is unsafe for consumption? In 2018, the state was rocked by reports of formalin-laced fish flooding local markets, leading to widespread concern over the health risks. Formalin is often used to extend the shelf life of fish. While raids and inspections continue to be conducted by the Goa Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), some unscrupulous vendors may still resort to the use of formalin to extend the freshness of the fish. Formalin is a known carcinogen. It is learnt that, on average, over four cases of cancer were reported every day in 2025 at the Oncology Department of the Goa Medical College Hospital (GMCH) at Bambolim. The department reportedly saw 1,550 cases of cancer in 2025. Cancer is a disease that can be caused by various factors, including environmental, genetic, and lifestyle factors. While the rise in cancer cases cannot be attributed solely to formalin-laced fish, it is plausible that exposure to formalin through contaminated food could be a contributing factor. Given the potential health risks, including cancer, associated with consuming formalin-laced fish, it is imperative that authorities and the public work together to address this issue. By adopting a proactive, multi-pronged approach, Goa can safeguard both its seafood industry and public health.
