In the past 3 days, 2 shocking incidents of crime against women have shocked Goans. This time, the perpetrators are locals, and like every crime that has occurred in the past, it's likely to lose its intensity due to the local-outsider politics that politicians and activists engage in. It's a shame on us, parents, society, and religion. We take pride in being a spiritual place, with many women deities worshipped in temples, yet we fail to instill these values. Women's safety has been a national issue for a long time, and it's concerning that our authorities don't seem to grasp its severity. To make matters worse, our society tends to victim-blame and shame, making it harder for women to approach the authorities. The Curchorem incident required activists to intervene, and the exploitation is appalling, putting other cases to shame. It's become increasingly difficult for women to step out of their houses, and in some cases, even within their own homes, they're not safe. It's time for us to acknowledge that women's safety is a societal problem, and we must work collectively to create a safer environment for women.
