The recent finding that several CCTV cameras in Vasco are not working has raised new concerns about Goa’s surveillance system. This comes after Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai questioned, in August, the spending of Rs 250 crore on CCTV cameras in Panaji under the Smart City mission. CCTV cameras are meant to improve public safety and reduce crime. With Goa dealing with issues like road accidents, littering, and street crimes, working cameras can help catch offenders and ensure they face action.
But there is little clarity on how many cameras are working and whether they are making any real impact. Taxpayers have a right to know what results these projects are giving. A proper review of CCTV systems across the State ” including their maintenance and effectiveness ” is needed to understand their value and plan future spending. The government should clearly explain the status of these projects, what they have achieved so far, and how they will be improved. This will help build public trust and ensure accountability in the use of public funds.
