Govt must take action against illegal scrapyards

RONNIE DSOUZA, Chandor | 14th December, 07:17 pm

The recent fire at the Verna scrapyards has once again exposed the grave issue of illegal scrapyard businesses run by outsiders on comunidade lands in Goa. These migrants, allegedly supported by certain local MLAs and ministers seeking votes and money, are exploiting our lands unlawfully.  It is high time the village Panchayats wake up and take a firm stand against corruption and illegal activities harming our environment and communities. The government’s negligence in regulating and demolishing these scrapyards is alarming. These businesses not only harass local Goans but also cause severe environmental damage through harmful chemicals. Goa is suffering due to the lack of safety measures and the ruling authorities’ apathy. I urge the administration to protect Goans, safeguard the environment, and take strict action against illegal scrapyards immediately.
