It must be said that there is a huge influx of migrants in the state, especially in the villages. It is common knowledge that these migrants could be involved in anti-social activities including theft, rapes and even murders. People in the villages, especially women, could be moving in fear of these migrants who could be moving about suspiciously at odd hours. Not all of these migrants could be working and may not possess a work-card provided by the contractor. Hence it seems mandatory for all migrants who are occupying rented accommodation to possess an identity card. It is learnt that the gram sabha of the Lotoulim village panchayat has demanded that the panchayat issue identity cards to migrants staying in the village. These identity cards could be provided during the tenant verification exercise. This will help the local authorities to identify those migrants living in the particular village. Those migrants with a criminal background need to be sent back to their home state. Our villages need to be made a safe place for the locals as was the case in the years gone by.
