Marking National Science Day in schools

Today, February 28, is celebrated as ‘National Science Day’ in order to commemorate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ in 1928 by Indian physicist C V Raman which led to Sir C V Raman winning the Nobel Prize in 1930. The day is dedicated to promote active involvement of students in science-related activities. On this day, students are apprised of the latest developments in the field of science and technology. Students should be encouraged to ask questions and promote their effective participation in various science projects. In the modern world, it is very essential to introduce and also encourage the science temperament among the students. The theme for National Science Day 2022 is ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future’. Many institutions organize open-house of their laboratories and apprise students of career opportunities available in a particular research laboratory and institution. The significance of scientific applications in daily life needs to be highlighted. Students with a scientific frame of mind should be given every opportunity to excel in the field of science and technology. Schools in Goa have just reopened after a gap of two years due to the pandemic. Hence it may probably not be possible to celebrate the ‘National Science Day’ the way it is normally done due to paucity of time. Nevertheless, it would be in the fitness of things to apprise the students of the significance of the day and probably even have a small science project in keeping with the importance of the day.
