It is learnt that retail fish vendors from South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) market have complained to the legislators of the area of the retail sale of fish at the wholesale fish market as a result of which it has affected the business of small-time fish vendors. The retail fish vendors have also raised the issue of sale of fish in retail along the municipal road outside the wholesale market.
On the contrary in the port town of Vasco fish vendors have been opposing the sale of fish by wholesalers near the retail fish market as it allegedly affects their business. The protest was made by traditional fish vendors in Vasco when the civic authorities had asked them to shift to a temporary shed as a new market is proposed to be constructed. It must be said that as a general rule those carrying out wholesale business and retail business should not be affected by the activities of one another.
While wholesale business is carried out in bulk quantities, retail business is carried out in small quantities. The retail price is always higher than the wholesale price. Nevertheless in order to avoid any confrontation it would be in the fitness of things for the civic authorities to allow wholesale and retail sale of fish to be carried out at a distance from each other at the various fish markets in the state. At the same time no sale of fish in retail should be allowed in the wholesale market and vice versa.
