Remove hurdles to opening of new Vasco fish market

ADELMO FERNANDES, Vasco | 14th September, 11:14 pm

After facing delays the newly-built Vasco fish market is all set for inauguration reportedly between September 25 and 30. The state-of-the art facility was a long pending demand of the citizens of Vasco. The present make-shift fish market is causing a lot of inconvenience to the locals as the floor is slippery due to improper drainage system. The place raises a stink due to stagnant water and is unhygienic. The new fish market built at an estimated cost of Rs 7 crore will come as a relief to fish-lovers in the port town. The fish vendors have put forth a few demands before the authorities concerned and have shown their reluctance to shift to the new fish market if their demands are not met. The obstacles to the inauguration ceremony and smooth functioning of the fish market needs to be removed by the authorities. It is pertinent to note that the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has reportedly declared the Baina and Vasco fish markets as “Notified Fish Markets” with immediate effect. The notification states that selling or storing fish within a one-kilometer radius of these markets is prohibited and will be treated as illegal.
