I write as a concerned citizen to highlight two pressing protests that reflect growing public unease over environmental and social governance in our state. First, the permanent repeal of Section 17(2) and Section 39A of the TCP Act. The call comes after alarming data presented in the Legislative Assembly showing that over 280 hectares of forest land have been diverted for non-forest purposes, including infrastructure projects, between April 2021 and March 2025. Second, residents of Panaji, under the banner “Ponjekars against Casinos,” are opposing the proliferation of casinos. It was revealed in the Assembly that eight casinos, both onshore and offshore, have failed to pay more than Rs 314.56 crore in dues to the state, with some arrears dating back to 2018. Instead of addressing these concerns, ministers of the ruling party have defended these policies with arrogance, dismissing evidence of harm and even deploying law enforcement to intimidate peaceful protesters. Such actions undermine democracy and erode public trust. I urge the government to listen to its citizens. The role of the press is vital, and I hope this matter receives the attention it deserves.
