It is learnt that Vasco railway station will be among 17 railway stations under South Western Railway (SWR) and 756 railway stations across the nation to get Video Surveillance System (VSS) with advanced technology. The project aims at enhancing security and ensuring safety of passengers at the railway station. The video feed of the CCTV cameras will be displayed at local Railway Protection Force posts and centralized CCTV control rooms at the divisional and zonal level. Recently there have been incidents of theft at a pet shop in Vasco and burglary at the Margao church. Both the crimes have gone undetected. The main reason could be that the culprits must have made a getaway by boarding the train and travelling to another state. CCTV footage which was available at the scene of the crime could be used to apprehend the culprits by comparing it to the CCTV footage at the railway station. It seems prudent for the video feed of the CCTV cameras at the railway station to be made available at the local police station as well in order to help police solve crimes.
