Your editorial ‘Shun politics over language, give Romi Konkani its due’ on August 1 is entirely based on facts. We, the Romi Lipi speaking, reading, and writing, are being deprived of recognition, although our freedom fighters who fought for the liberation of Goa and to include Konkani language in the 8th schedule were deliberately deprived to enforce Devanagari and state that this is the official Konkani language of Goa, to satisfy the protagonists.
The CM’s comment that the demand is made for the sake of politics is uncalled for. Goans speak Konkani wherever they are, and to label it as no genuine love for the language is absurd.
Konkani-speaking Goans are only requesting to amend the law and accommodate Romi and give it equal status along with Devanagari, for which all of us have waited for 37 long years after Konkani got the official status, and by doing so, to raise our flag high for our mother tongue, Konkani in Roman script.
