Recently, a tragic incident in Dwarka involved an underage driver without a valid licence driving an SUV recklessly while reportedly making social media reels. The vehicle collided with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction, and the 23-year-old rider lost his life. My heartfelt condolences go to his single mother on losing her only child. While this case received media attention, underage driving remains a serious and common problem across India.
In Goa too, I often see underage boys and girls riding motorcycles and driving cars, particularly in the Benaulim, Colva and Margao areas. Another dangerous practice is driving on the wrong side of the road to save time or fuel. Such careless behaviour has also led to fatal accidents in the past. I urge the Goa Transport Minister and the Transport Department to address these violations seriously and introduce stricter laws and heavier fines in the upcoming Assembly session. Statements promising “enquiry and strict action” after tragedies are not enough. Proactive and preventive measures are urgently needed to reduce road deaths and ensure safer roads for all.
