It must be said that unhygienic conditions and improper sanitation is not an issue only at Cutbona but probably every fishing jetty in the state including Mobor, Malim, Cortalim, Chapora, Talpona and Kharewado. The recent cases of dengue and cholera is a wake-up call and has succeeded in bringing the crisis to the attention of the government. Though the sanitation amenities at Cutbona have improved significantly, the same needs to be extended to other fishing jetties in the state. Only a concerted effort by the Environment ministry, the PWD, the Health Department, the local panchayats/municipalities and the boat owners can bring a lasting solution to the problem. This health problem has been festering for several years and probably even for decades. Necessary remedial steps need to be taken before it turns into a health crisis. Migrant labourers working here should be provided with all basic amenities which includes proper sanitation and clean drinking water. If the menace is not nipped in the bud, fishing jetties could become hotspots for various diseases. To prevent this the authorities concerned need to act decisively.
