Goa has recently seen the cutting of cable wires hanging on electricity poles in Panaji and other cities, following a petition filed in the High Court. As per the court’s order, the drive to remove these cables will continue. The electricity department says many poles are being used by cable operators, who paid dues in 2021 but have not taken permission to continue since last year. A recent accident in Panaji, where a father and son were injured near a school because of loose wires, has highlighted the danger. The court has now directed that only a limited number of cables be allowed on the poles. Cable TV and dish TV are common in households, and many prefer local cable networks, which offer channels not available on Dish TV. However, operators should reduce the number of wires on poles and shift to underground cabling. Poles should carry only electric wires to avoid accidents and damage.
